Geeks With Blogs

News
About Me:
I am a Female SharePoint Developer (a platinum unicorn). I have been working with SharePoint since I attended the Portal University in 2005. I hold a BA in Computer Science from the University of Missouri - Kansas City. I love playing Rockband, organizing user group meetings, working with code, attending events as a speaker or organizer, and having bizarre conversations about geek things with cool people. If you have any comments or questions fill out the contact form and I will try my best to help.

The Guide of a MOSSLover Becky Isserman's Blog Life, The Universe, and Everything
New York I Love You/I Hate You...
New York City was always this fantasy far away that I couldn't touch. I'm not sure it's really New York, but a place that was outside of St. Louis. A place that was outside this whole midwestern bubble I lived in when I was a kid. All I had was school and baseball, because well everything else wasn't so great when I until after I turned 18. When I was 18 I had this really great summer and it felt like everything was changing. It was the beginning of my life. I had no idea what that summer meant, ......

Happy Birthday SharePoint Saturday!
It was one year ago that SharePoint Saturday kicked off in Virginia Beach. Michael Lotter, Susan Lennon, and Kevin Israel thanks for creating one of the most successful events around the world. What started out as one or two events has multiplied into over a dozen events and then some. Thank you so much (especially Michael and Susan) for all that you have given to the rest of us. I wouldn't know most of you guys out there without them. It's been an awesome year. Keep up the good work ......

More Changes...
Stuff has changed drastically for me in the past two to three years. I moved over 1000 miles from Saint Louis. I go outside and I get up in front of crowds with less issues. Now I'm changing jobs again. I'm not really sure what to say here. I was obviously unhappy and I needed to do something different. So quit two days ago and I guess it worked out that I end with B&R this Friday, then head to TEC and SPS Huntsville and a week from this Monday I start my new job at Gig Werks. I'm not sure what ......

Strange Happenings
There are weeks we go about our life thinking nothing is going to change nothing will happen. Then there are other weeks a billion things happen at once. Friday started off very weird for me. I flew into Atlanta and I met some cool people for another SharePoint event. I had some good conversations. Saturday then hit me and my virtual machine bombed in my presentation after the auto updater ran. I was writing code on the board and describing everything in notepad. I would say as presentations go it ......

Three Weeks…
So I did it. I moved, I ran a SharePoint Saturday, and I attended a wedding. I can’t say everything went smoothly in the process, but I will say it all worked out for the best. I started out my stressful adventure a couple months ago with packing and changing everything over to the new address. Here is my account as best as I can describe it to you guys… I woke up on Friday, December 11th at about 6 am after sleeping on the floor with my boyfriend. The mover’s came at about 7 am to pack the pod. ......

Perspective…
Every time around this year we have about 800 blog posts on how great or how horrible or what happened in the year or the decade. The decade is closing and I will say this that it was one of my favorites. I graduated from high school, college, and I started my first real job. I was active in LGBT rights clubs, Interfaith Clubs, .Net User Groups, SharePoint User Groups. I lead the planning of 2 successful SharePoint Saturday events. I attended these events: MOSS Camp St. Louis (2008 and 2009) Tulsa ......

Major Conference Cherry Popped…
So you are going to an event with 7,000 people that have similar interests to learn about a product that you have a vague idea about…I was excited prior to the event and nervous. I had a very bad week before the event. Every piece of technology that I brought with me to St. Louis broke. I had little sleep trying to get my code done and my technology to the point I started out with that Monday. Finally by Friday I was beat and hung out with my friends…On Saturday I went to Coders and everything after ......

Apartment Shopping – No SPS NY
I’m not attending SPS NY (or at least I think I will not attend), so I pulled out my speaker submission. I have two full days with my boyfriend to apartment shop and that weekend should be more geared towards finding a place. I really wanted to attend, but priorities need to be placed in other areas right now. I am considering attending SPS Bham, but I am not fully sure where I will be and if it’s at all possible fully. I may speak at theSSWUG.org VConference again this fall (maybe Omaha SPUG and ......

I’m around…Not fully hiding…
So I’ve been kind of busy lately in Omaha…I have a new gig that deals with FAST and SharePoint, but it’s government so I can’t really talk about it. So far I’ve met a person in Omaha related to SharePoint name Kirk Hofer. He is running the SPUG in Omaha. It sounds like it should be fun. Hopefully we can get a few SharePint’s going in the future. I just did our first unofficial SharePint event in KC…We had about 5 people…We might do another next month to see if we can get more if we hold it in Kansas. ......

I was on a plane between Chicago and Omaha and noticed there is a special promotion with Buy One Get the second ticket for $25. My name is Becky Isserman. Everyone in the Kansas City Community knew me as Becky before they even knew who MOSSLover was on the web. I didn’t even buy the domain until last year in April after the first event I attended, STL MOSS Camp. It’s really weird how much I’ve done and how far I’ve come since then. I swear I was ten times more nervous that first time. Who wouldn’t be with there dad in the room? When I was at DC I got up and I spoke and I fumbled ten times less. I'm sitting here talking to someone on im and realizing how stupid I've been lately. We all take for granted what we have. I have an amazing job and I work with great people. So some of you follow me on twitter and some of you my blog. I’m sure some are wondering why I never came home last night. What happened? So I’m going to give you the very long version, because I love writing it out. It helps me realize all the insanity and gives me a sense of catharsis in the end. Some of you follow me on twitter and others do not so some of you know I ran into a door over the weekend. I was not inebriated. I was leaving the bathroom too quickly, so that I could see Dr. Who Series 4 Finale (Journey’s End). I was really really excited. I had been waiting to see this episode for ages. I haven't been home in over 2 months. I know some of you wouldn't understand why I am so fixated with going home. I have never lived further than 500 miles away from St. Louis. Just enough space to keep my parents from visiting me every weekend, but just enough space to go home. This past year has been a big whirlwind and last week was the culmination of my insanity. More SharePoint Saturday Thoughts
So I think I picked something up this weekend. Not sure what, but I'm not feeling so great. You know me I'm running at 50 mph and when I get sick I have to stop and pause. Sometimes it's great, but other times not so much. Anyway, so a little more on the meeting with Joel, so there was a speaker dinner Friday night. I left my coat by my chair and went to the bathroom. When I came back Joel was sitting next to my chair. It was apparent who it was and I kind of just sat there stunned. Honestly, this ......

Reflecting on 2008...
It's weird it's 2009...If I look back to when I was 10 all I wanted to do was get to 18, so I could leave my parents house. On December 31st, 2000 things were so very different. I was 17 years old about to turn 18 a couple months later. I went to my grandmother's apartment at the assisted living facility a week before and she was complaining of a cold or the flu. This day was the day that she would end up in the hospital. I had this gut feeling that we wouldn't see her again outside of the hospital. ......

I was going to go to start school again, but my job basically was we want to move you to Kansas City and we don't really have other options. I knew how it went. I was 24 years old. I had to move. Kansas City Day of Dot Net - Some Thoughts...
As most of you know my blog posts are a little random and more towards free writing. I just think and write. So today the Kansas City Day of Dot Net took place at Centriq. I was freaking out a little bit, because I wanted it to succeed so bad. I was afraid that being our first event here in the past ten year that no one would show up. I downloaded a ton of different applications for music and tweeting and such. A couple people in the community have heard me complain a lot about my best friend's wedding. All in all there were good parts of the trip and that is what I will talk about the good parts of the trip and not the bad parts. The highlights of the trip included the Inner Harbor. We got in incredibly late on Friday and ended up passing out on site. The next day we went to the Inner Harbor in Baltimore and caught a Unicycle Pirate Lady and the Body ......

Why I need a Smart Phone and a little more...
So my friend Leah and I hung out most of the day yesterday in between cooking. We ate some awesome pancakes at the Old Pancaked House in St. Louis, went to my Parent's Seder, and watched a Forgetting Sarah Marshall. I went to bed about 1 am and heard my phone half ringing and I just kind of shrugged it off. I wake up and listen to the message and I can't hear half of a message from Leah. I called her and she told me there was a huge gas leak and they had to call 911. Her dog Rusty was kind of lethargic ......

A Loaded Weekend...
This weekend rocked, but it was also very stressful. I started to think about what I want to do with my career. I have to admit that where I want to go is at least to try to obtain MVP Status. I have to want it enough and head myself in the right direction. I need to stop sitting back and assuming what I am doing is working out. So you guys are going to see some changes happening soon. I have to thank a lot of people for helping me out, especially Sahil Malik and David Isserman. They spoke to me ......

Yep...Not feeling so good...
I've been MIA due to a bladder infection and stomach flu and will most likely not be writing much. The muscle relaxers help a ton, so that I can move on occassion and sleep for a few hours...While you guys are waiting for new posts check out something I found that I created ages ago that still exists: http://members.aol.com/jade... I hope that you all had a good week and are having a good weekend. Technorati Tags: Personal Life ......

A Great Man Died Yesterday...
One of my favorite Science Fiction authors of all time died yesterday, Arthur C. Clarke, who wrote some of my favorite Space Odyssey Books. I just finished reading 3001 a couple of months ago. It's sad Asimov, Sagen, Adams, and now Clarke...All the greats are going...What next Bradbury? I'm a little sad 3001 was left kind of open ended...I want to know if humanity finally meets the aliens. I want to know if they survive and what happens 1,000 further in the future...I guess I'll never know. Technorati ......

Kansas City Office Geeks in Da HOUSE!!!!!
What is an Office Geek? An Office Geek is someone - typically a developer or administrator - who works with or is interested in working with some aspect of the Microsoft Office System. The Office System encompasses both client applications (Word, Excel, etc) as well as server applications (primarily SharePoint, but also Forms Server, workflow, etc). This could mean that you work with SharePoint, use VSTO to write OBAs, define taxonomies, maintain corporate records, etc. I found this little blurb ......

My Nemesis XPath
I did not realize this fact until today...I really dislike XPath as I am not allowed to express hate due to it being technically against my religious beliefs. I was working with a form in InfoPath 2003, because Terracon is not getting 2007 until next year. I created this form that uses a repeating table and a drop down list. When certain values are selected on the drop down list it will pop up certain text in various columns in this row. Unfortunately I was getting only the last row using a count ......

Oops...Hilarity Ensues...
Look what I did to Paul Galvin's Blog Yesterday: I posted one comment received an error and gave it. I guess the error meant my browser wanted to post 6 comments on his blog without my name, even if I was logged into my Live ID. What I love is that every time I log on with my Live ID at work it won't post my name on comments anymore. Thank you blocking software...It's really grinding my gears...It's great we don't get to use messenger the productivity level rocks, but every so often something is ......

Looking for More Speaking Opportunities in Kansas City and Surrounding Areas
I would really like to develop better communications skills, so if anyone has a medium for me to speak about any SharePoint Topic please let me know. So far I have slides for Feature Design and Disaster Recovery, but I can pretty much cover any topic. I am just looking for a way that I can refine my communication skills and get more experience interacting with other people. I usually work weekdays from Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. I should be available anytime after 4:30 pm on weekdays ......

Hopping on Five Hundred Feet from Behind the Silverlight Train
I know I'm a little slow in doing so, but today I finally sat down and went through all the Silverlight 2.0 Beta 1.0 Templates. I was incredibly impressed with some of it and sorely disappointed with other parts. Everyone has said it is really easy to use this technology and I agree. I have a little PhotoShop experience from my web design days. I have dabbled in some animated gifs, Flash Creations, PDF Creations, Corel Draw, Paint .Net, and who knows what else. I opened up the VS 2008 Template and ......

Day After Birthday Blues
It's Monday about 7:00 am...Your boyfriend's alarm just went off and you sort of half wakeup. You feel like someone hit you with a large truck. You don't know exactly why you feel like someone hit you with a truck. You begin to ponder is it because you went out and did not take it easy at all while you had a sinus infection. Is it because you were banging the drums a little too hard on Rockband the other night? 7:17 am roles around, so you wake up do the morning routine and head to work. Your entire ......

Pardon My Construction
I want to apologize to anyone reading my feeds lately or reading my blog entries. I am trying import 5 entries a day to the new blog, so you are going to see a bunch of entries from the old blog posted to FeedBurner again. I am really sorry and this mess should be cleaned up, hopefully, within the next few months. Maybe some of the new people reading the blog missed some of the entries, so it might be nice to re-visit some old entries. Maybe you will also notice a gap in some topics related to SharePoint ......

Hard Day...
So I saw a weird post on my online banking statement this morning. I googled the company and it turned out to be a Christian Bookstore. I go to work and immediately call the debit card company, because it looked like someone had used my debit card to buy some Christian Book or Paraphanalia. This post was for Friday and it had posted right before I woke up. Not to mention, I am Jewish and I don't remember the last time I ever bought any Christian Books or Paraphanalia since I was taking religious ......

My Family...Specifically My Dad...
I don't like writing about too much personal stuff in this blog. I usually save it for my anonymous blogspot entries where I usually free style write. I wanted to throw out a good reason why I don't post as often as I would like. My dad has been having a really hard time the past few months. A month ago I got this really bizarre call from my mom that entailed her speaking with an EMT and not directly at the voicemail. I gave her a call on her cell, but she didn't answer. Finally my dad answers, but ......

What's in the Pipline for Me in the Future...
I have a lull at work as it happens every once in a while, so of course you see me post at least once a day. I am kind of ADHD when it comes to having nothing to do at work. Today I went through SharePointFeeds.com about 800 times refreshing the OMEA Reader, looked up some Silverlight creation tools, played around with a few PowerShell Tools, and now I find myself at this blog yet again. I am half waiting for a book proposal to get pushed through a publishing company that contacted me. I just sent ......
