Windows Update seemed stuck on some files. I found KB971058 (How do I reset Windows Update components?) which had a bunch of suggestions. The one I tried was: Delete the qmgr*.dat files. Two problems have appeared: Windows Update and Recovery is unresponsive – the page just show the circular hourglass thingy (what is it called?); also prevents shutting down Windows and I have to force it. Start menu no longer works – just have the standard Windows 7 UI. Some would say that was an improvement but I wouldn’t regard them as being particularly helpful.
