I was working on an application at work when I needed to figure out a really trivial case, well, trivial in theory at least. All I wanted to know was if a button was completely inside a rectangle. Could anything else be simpler you think. Just check the button bounds against the rectangle bounds, pseudocode if (Button.Top > Rectangle.Top && Button.Left > Rectangle.Left && Button.Right < Rectangle.Right && Button.Bottom < Rectangle.Bottom) { //Button is inside rectangle ...

Windows Phone 7 will be the 3rd important smartphone platform on the market (in my personal opinion) and one goal of SharpBox was and is to support the big three, so the library has to be adapt for the following systems: iOS on iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch based on MonoTouch Windows Phone 7 based on WP7 SDK Android on phones and tabs based on MonoDroid The iOS support was part of the library since version 1.0.1. We are working on the Android and Windows Phone 7 support very hard. Today a first preview ...

Spending a saturday with a bunch of developers at my last Windows Phone 7 event in San Diego with Woody Pewitt and Jim Bears.

The last couple of weeks I have been working through some proof of concepts for Windows Phone 7. While working through one exercise I had a flashback. The book I was reading mentioned how you needed to code your application to have the smallest possible memory and and processing speed footprint. Suddenly I was back in high school with my Tandy hand-held computer which had a single line of text screen and a whopping 1K of memory. Talk about limitations. So what else can you learn from developing in ...

Want to drag and drop files from your computer directly to your Windows Phone 7 device? The folks at WPCentral have posted an article showing how to do it! Just remember you have to do the hack on every computer you want to transfer files from.

I had the pleasure of attending and speaking at the Tampa .Net Code Camp 2010. I covered MVC3 and NuGet. I also leveraged the lunch break to show most of Scott Hanselman’s highly rated open source PDC10 session. To watch Scott’s video please visit: http://www.hanselman.com/bl... Mr and Mrs. Keith Kabza and the VisualGov team’s hard work was quiet visible at the nicely organized event where all went smooth from early morning registration to ...
I have mentioned before that I own an Android phone. But I can drive a car and still be interested in motor bikes – and so it was that I spend my weekend at the Brisbane Windows Phone 7 Startup Camp. The event schizophrenically mixed the startup camp idea (create a new business in a weekend) with the new Windows Phone 7 technology. Over the weekend 7 teams built 7 apps, forming the basis of 7 new businesses. It doesn’t get much more biblical than that. Things began on Friday, with an optional training ...

This FAQ article came across my Twitter stream this afternoon. It’s related to the Samsung Focus, but this line suggests its a broad design feature of WP7 devices: Windows Phone 7 does not support freely swapping microSD Card in and out. ORLY!? Not only that but… Many commercially available retail microSD cards are not approved for use in Windows Phone 7. Use of unapproved cards may cause performance degradation or device instability including unexpected reset and loss of user data. A microSD card ...

I had a whole blog post written up on the evils of Telus and how the “largest 3G network in Canada” doesn’t even run through two of the central provinces – Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Then I found out that they actually are 3G in SK and have the Windows Phone 7 devices listed as “coming soon”, so it would seem that Manitoba is the only province left out. Fine. Whatever. But that still leaves us with an interesting landscape here in Canada. We have three carriers committed to WP7 devices at launch: ...

The release of the recent update to the Xbox 360’s dashboard has caused quite a commotion among the Xbox LIVE Indie Games (“XBLIG”) community. The primary reasons for this have been a negative response to various changes that have occurred in regards to XBLIG’s look and presence on the Xbox. Unfortunately, what was an “Indie Developers Unhappy With Dashboard Changes” story has been slowly corrupted into a “Microsoft Wants To Kill XBLIG” story. I undoubtedly played a part in that with my post here ...
I have been playing with the Windows Phone 7 Toolkit all day long (Saturday), all while reading Charles Petzold’s eBook brought to us for free by Microsoft Press. Time for this 1013-page book couldn’t have been better as it provides us with insights into WP7 development right at the time WP7 phones are becoming available to consumers. We greatly appreciate and acknowledge the cost Microsoft must have incurred and the big time sacrifice Charles must have made to get that high quality book publicly ...
A couple of weeks ago, I took a four hour drive to visit Tampa where I got to meet our Microsoft Developer Evangelist Joe Healy (aka. Devfish). Present were (in alphabetical order) Scott Dorman, Nikita Polyakov, Bill Reiss, Ken Tucker, and Kevin Wolf. Joe Healy was recently featured in a Jessie Liberty YapCast discussing WP7 and the important role Florida plays in evangelizing the value this ...

If you are one of the numerous PDC10 attendees moving your iPhone SIM to your free LG-E900 Windows Phone 7, and you're on AT&T, you may have noticed the minute you lost WiFi coverage your data stopped as well. If you read through the paperwork that comes with the phone there was a quick little note that says "you may need to manually configure your APN setting." Well that was an important hint to getting your Windows Phone 7 up and running with data on AT&T. To updates the APN do the following ...

Microsoft Press is giving away Charles Petzold’s new Programming Windows Phone 7 book! This isn’t just a short intro-type book either. 24 chapters and over 1000 pages, this is a huge piece of Windows Phone 7 steak. You can download the e-book and the associated code examples from the MS Press blog here.

So, while I didn’t get to attend PDC2010, I did get to watch it live at the Microsoft Offices in Johannesburg. It had all the usual things I was expecting, Windows Phone 7 Demo’s, Azure Demo’s and Balmer giving a great pounding impersonation. For me though, the highlight of the whole thing was mention of TFS being made available in the Azure Cloud, with a CTP due early next year. I have been eyeing TFS for a while now but decided against it because of the poor reviews I heard of it in a remote setup. ...

Today I have been invited by Microsoft Switzerland to present three of our awesome Windows Phone 7 applications on stage at their yearly Shape conference. It was a great moment, and I felt super proud to show the IMDb app, the Twitter app and the SBB Mobile app. The response was excellent, I didn’t have one single demo effect, was able to stream a movie preview live from the IMDb app, to show most features of the Twitter app, to load a timetable and purchase a ticket from the SBB app, and all this ...

After I posted my last blog post, Ralph Squillace responded with a link that everyone that is doing OData/WP7 development should be aware of. 2 days before I posted my Data/WP7 post, Microsoft's Mike Flasco posted this regarding the changes that are coming in the RTM version of the Windows Phone 7 library. The current WP7 phone platform is missing some core types, types that data service client LINQ provider requires to function properly. The CTP that is currently available (and which my example ...
In the past few weeks, I have not been the most prolific blogger. Just a quick tip: in case you are trying to register your windows phone 7 as a developer phone (so that you can deploy your app on it and debug directly on the device from Visual Studio 2010) and get the "Error communicating with the developer portal 0x64" error you might want to check that the regional settings for the Windows Live ID you're using are the same as the regional settings of your development machine where you're running the registration tool. In my case the Windows Live ID was set to ...
Today was the day Microsoft finally took the full covers off Windows Phone 7. Many of the questions of what that means to you, and the general public have been finally answered. It's been so long since I posted on the blog that doing it now makes me a bit feel a bit weird. In my defense, i've been quite busy these past months: I left my previous company, got married, moved to a new country, started work for a cool company here... in this order :) More recently I've been working on a small app for Windows Phone 7 and one of the app's needs is some (fancy) charts...you know, the bar/pie/gauge kind. While there are some nice control libraries out there for bar and pie charts, ...
Just finished watching the Windows Phone 7 launch event that streamed live from NYC this morning. Was a great event that really set the stage for the platforms launch next month. My general thoughts are that the platform looks very promising and Microsoft is definitely leveraging lessons learned from Apple and Google’s phone offerings as well as the various platforms that they’ve developed (.NET, Silverlight, XNA, Zune, etc.). Of course, until people actually get their hands on the devices and put ...
