TFS Service - Configure Source and Symbol Server Settings
I don’t think I need to call out the importance of Indexing Source Symbols, in case you need a reminder read the benefits of symbols here. Recently I wrote a blog post on the Microsoft ALM blog describing the improvements made to the Visual Studio debugger, this also improves the overall user debugging experience. TFS Service doesn’t index the source symbols, of course if you think this would be a cool feature, please vote for this feature request here. TFS Service build engine however, gives you ......

TFS - Get List Of Software Installed On Build Agent
Introduction It is common for your code projects to reference Microsoft or Non Microsoft SDKs, this requires that the build agents has the SDK’s installed. It is also natural that some of your projects may have a hard dependency on the version of the SDK. For example, some of your projects may only compile with Azure 1.6 SDK. The absence of the required SDK may cause your builds to fail. I tend to use the TFS Service cloud Build Service a lot, a list of software installed on the provisioned build ......

TFS Shipping Cadence
Brian Harry has formally announced a change to the TFS shipping cadence from the traditional 2-3 years to production cycle to a more agile and refreshing minimum once in a 3 weeks cycle! The change didn’t happen over night, it was a gradual process which was greatly influenced by moving TFS to the cloud. The thinking started with trying to figure out what the team wanted. Like people often do, the team started with what they knew and tried to evolve from there. The team spent a few months thinking ......

Introduction to Branching by Quality [Branching-Merging Techniques]
There is no one best branching strategy, the branching strategy that best fits the requirements of your enterprise is the best strategy for you. The ALM rangers have comprehensive guidelines to help you decide what might work best with your enterprise. A couple of parameters you need to consider while thinking about the branching strategy are, What is the length of the Iteration your team will be delivering in. Agile – Weeks, Waterfall – Months. What is new in VS TFS 2011 Part 2
Welcome back, in part 1 of what is new in VS TFS 2011 I talked about the offering from a developers perspective. In this blog post I’ll be discussing the new features available for Business Analysts and Testers. While working on various ALM implementations the biggest challenge has been to strike the right balance between tools and processes, it is important to re-enforce that there is no substitute for communication. The delivery of a project on time and on budget are not the sole indicators of ......

What is new in VS TFS 2011 Part 1
Microsoft officially released the preview of Vnext i.e. VS 2011, TFS 2011 and TFS Azure (also known as TFS Service) at the Build conference on 13th September 2011 @ California. It wasn’t too long ago I remember helping customers set up ALM processes using TFS 2010, so what are the compelling reasons these customers who have heavily invested in TFS 2010 should consider moving on to TFS 2011. In this blog post I’ll try and answer what exactly is new in TFS 2011, how TFS 2011 is different from TFS 2010. ......

The good news is that it is possible to work with TFS Azure using Visual Studio 2010. In this blog post, I’ll be showing you how to set up a developer machine with Visual Studio 2010 and connecting to TFS Azure. => Set up a new machine with Visual Studio 2010 ......

TFS Azure - KB2581206 causes VS2010 with SP1 to stop working
To connect and authenticate with the Team Foundation Service Preview you need to install the hotfix KB2581206. While setting up a new machine to work with TFS Azure (#TfsService) i encountered a problem after installing service patch KB2581206. Reason: if you fail to install service pack 1 before installing the hotfix you might see strange behaviour with Visual Studio. Thanks to Trevor from Microsoft for confirmation. => How can I tell if i have Visual Studio Service Pack 1 installed? If you have ......
