Chris G. Williams Beware: I mix tech and personal interests here.
As has become the norm in recent years, there are a number of interesting genre flicks in the pipeline. Here's a little info about some of the movies that will be hitting the screens this summer. Enjoy and feel free to discuss.

First, the release dates for some of the bigger titles:

STAR WARS: REVENGE OF THE SITH - May 19
BATMAN BEGINS - June 17
WAR OF THE WORLDS - June 29
HOUSE OF WAX - June 30
FANTASTIC FOUR - July 8
CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY - July 15 (Johnny Depp)
THE CROW: WICKED PRAYER (Direct to DVD) - July 19
V FOR VENDETTA - November 5
HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE - November 18
THE BROTHERS GRIMM - November 23 (Terry Gilliam)

Here are a few with dates, but I've heard little or no buzz for them yet:

SNAKE PLISSKEN CHRONICLES - Summer 2005? (Anime to feature John Carpenter's character from ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK / ESCAPE FROM L.A., reportedly with Kurt Russell returning to do voice work.
MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 3 - 2005? (I suspect Tom Cruise's involvement with WAR OF THE WORLDS has pushed this one back a bit.)
KING KONG - December 2005?

A little further off, we should be seeing these:

X-MEN 3 - May 3, 2006 (Pre-production)
GHOST RIDER - Summer 2006 (Now shooting w/ Nicholas Cage)
SUPERMAN RETURNS - 2006 (Now shooting)
SPIDER-MAN 3 - May 4, 2007 (Now shooting. Reports are that there are plans for a total of SIX Spider-Man flicks in the series. We'll see.)

Lastly, these are looking like a 'go':

WICKER MAN - In development w/ Nicholas Cage. Looks to be a pretty straight remake of the horror/suspense classic. No word yet on who'd be playing the Christopher Lee part. May I suggest Anthony Hopkins?
WONDER WOMAN - In development w/ Joss Whedon producing. No word on who will play the title role as yet. Fan word of mouth is behind relative unknown Jordan Bayne, while Charisma Carpenter was quoted recently in TV Guide as saying she'd "kill" for the role. There's also been some mention of Sarah Michelle Gellar, but I'd attribute that entirely to speculation due to Whedon's involvement rather than actual studio thinking.
CASINO ROYALE - The next James Bond movie is intended to be a more serious take, back to the roots of the series. As of now there is no word on who is to play Bond. In an interesting comment, Quentin Tarrantino recently stated that if Pierce Brosnan would return as 007, he'd be interested in directing this one! Now -that's- an interesting notion.
LAND OF THE LOST - Will Ferrell (!) will be playing Rick Marshall, with a script that apparently doesn't feature Will and Holly at all, in a big-screen update of the fondly-remembered Kroft SF/adventure series.

Some interesting stuff indeed. We'll see how many of them make it to the screen, I guess. Posted on Thursday, May 5, 2005 6:52 AM General Interest | Back to top
