Chris G. Williams Beware: I mix tech and personal interests here.

It's time to upgrade or find a new direction. All my HA! code is sitting out in VSS 6.0d

Aside from the obvious (backing up my database)... are there any other suggestions for making the transition from VSS 6.0d to VSS 2005 a smooth and painless one?

Has anyone here done it yet?

I'm still tempted to use SourceGear Vault, except for the fact that it requires SQL Server... yes I have SQL Server, but it's just one more potential POF to deal with. I don't exactly run on the NEWEST of hardware... ok well my dev machine is, of course, but my blah-blah servers tend to be thrown together with whatever I was using last year. My VSS machine only cost me $40 (and half an hour to reformat so I could get rid of the RedHat install that was on it)

I am using the Whidbey Beta 2 with VSS2005. It started using VSS2005 automatically to look at the 6d database and did it without a problem.

The 2005 integration with Whidbey kicks over 6d. You can rename, move and delete items and it will ask what changes you want made back in VSS.

I haven't had any problems with it.

piece o cake... everything went fine. Didn't bother upgrading the server, just the client bits. Probably tackle the server part some other time.

Well, sourcesafe 2005 is got to be the most useless upgrade ever. Other than some graphics and UI changes, it is totally useless, slow as 6.0 and still is not even close to CVS. so dont waste your time on it.

to think its 7 years in the making!!:) what a joke....

I suppose it's a good thing he wasn't asking about CVS, then. He was asking about VSS. Everyone knows about CVS, thank you. Linux is great, Linux is wonderful, Microsoft is the anti-christ. Why do Linux people feel the need to bloviate when people talk about Windows?

Easily, given that VSS is free as well. Silly child, do some research next time.

VSS is free only if you have a qualifying product, such as a valid personal MSDN subscription. each user must have a license (MSDN subscription is per person not pc). VSS is about £300 packaged product. standard Visual studio doesn't include vss license.

cvs is great if
you can make it work
your time is free
you don't already use VSS

From the outside, there is little changed in 6.0d. But Microsoft did fix some bugs and from my experience, 6.0d is the best version in 6.x.

I am writing a SourceSafe tutorial at:

Thanks.
