Any of you uber-geeks ever use SphereXP? http://www.hamar.sk/sphere/ I'm considering trying it, unless someone fills my head with horror stories. Posted on Friday, June 24, 2005 4:41 PM Game Development , General Interest | Back to top

No horror stories at all...

Ive tried it a few times over the last few years and, to me, it seems like a very good starting place. We are still obviously limited by the hardware and our interface to it (typical kybd and mouse) but it is still a pretty neat idea. - As long as you have the video card that supports it.

If you are going to actually set it as your shell, then make sure you check out "ShellON". Simply put it is a menu for your desktop of your choice.

Right now I have Windows Explorer, GeoShell, and SphereXP all listed, and on login I can choose which shell to launch into. It also captures those nasty shell crashes.

hth.

I've found it to be 'okay'. The concept itself is pretty cool, but it's just felt clumsy and was just chewing up more memory. :/

The guy who sent me the link thought it was pretty nifty. I agree that the concept is very cool, and could be nifty. I am sort of the opinion that it might be pretty to look at, but might not be worth the loss of memory to run it. Still, I am tempted to install it just to try something new.

it takes lots om RAM (till 80MB)
I agree that idea is good
but is so stupid to use .Net to mage this tool (couse GDI+ in .net doesn't use hardvare acceleration)
I was frostrated by this program

this concept has been pulled from project looking glass... there is some rumor that microsoft is planning on using 3d rendering for vista and xp (as a released addon)... the project name is aero i believe.

i would like to see sphere be able to refresh the screens that don't have focus that are off to the side. it does use alot of memory. i really have no problem though because i have 2gbs of memory.

I think it's a very good concept, but i am personally a bit constrained in the memory department... I dont know if its the program that's making tings blurry, or my memory. Nonetheless, It could be usefull... maybe... probably not, but you never know... i give it one thumb up...

I really didn't like the interface. It did have a little "wow" effect to it but that wore off after about the 3rd time I lost my page. It's a great concept but the GUI needs to be cleaned up and the interface improved. I give it an E for effort.
