Chris G. Williams Beware: I mix tech and personal interests here.

Normally, I'm a bit of a sourpuss around Christmas time and most people (that know me) know it's not exactly my favorite time of the year. In fact, I think the whole holiday season is grossly overhyped and has pretty much lost any relationship to the original meaning. I guess you could even say I'm a bit of a Grinch. (For the record, I'm definitely NOT a Scrooge.)

So I approached this year's Christmas with the same measure of reluctance and dread as I always do. I figured it would be just like all the others.Too much hype, followed by the inevitable letdown and crash. I vowed to try something different this year. I decided to change Christmas. (cue dramatic music)

Well, it worked... sorta. I didn't actually manage to change Christmas, but something did happen. Somewhere along the way I realized I was having a good time this year. I spent more money this year than ever before (so that couldn't possibly be it) and despite being royally screwed by the evil Target Corporation, I did all my own shopping instead of letting other people take care of it. I had a great time picking out toys (I really love toys, but I get sad at the thought of giving them away to other people!!) and clothes and DVDs and electronic gizmos. My oldest daughter was in town and she went shopping with me. We had a blast! (As Dr. Seuss said, the Grinch's heart grew two sizes that day.)

Instead of hoarding everything until Christmas Day, I gave out gifts every single day for about a week. There wasn't much left on Christmas Day to give out, but everyone was happy. Hell, I was even happy. There was no huge buildup of anticipation, no staggering letdown on the 25th when you realize it's all over for another year. My Christmas lasted a week!! (I know... I know... my Jewish friends are shaking their heads and laughing. You guys have been doing something similar for millennia!)

So I can honestly say, this year was the best Christmas ever. I spent the entire week in a good mood, made a lot of people really happy, and managed to rack up some pretty cool swag for myself as well. Sweet.

Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, etc...

Da hoo foress, fa hoo doress...
