Chris G. Williams Beware: I mix tech and personal interests here.
I recently received an invite to try out Windows Live Messenger (beta).

I downloaded and installed it. That went easy enough.

It was ok at first, then I realized it imported my entire hotmail contacts list into the client, including a hell of a lot of people who aren't using MSN messenger. Ok no big deal, I'll just remove them from my list. Uhh... I can't remove them from my buddy list without also removing them from my Hotmail address book?? WTF?

Ok, that's kinda forgiveable... I guess (not really, but I'm willing to overlook it.) So next I look about and see that none of my Messenger contact groups made it over to the new one... so I have to set all of those back up again.

Easy enough, except now I have all these EXTRA PEOPLE that I didn't exactly want on my buddy list since they don't use MSN Messenger and probably never will. I can't find any way to hide them either. Maybe nobody considered that I have people in my address book that I don't want to chat with every day? Like businesses and such?

So I tell myself, well it's a beta... maybe its just not ready for primetime yet. So I uninstall it and that goes smoothly. Except now, after the uninstall, my previous MSN messenger install no longer works.

Verdict: Stay Away (for now) Retry in 2-3 months.

P.S. Also, since I'm no longer using MSN Messenger anymore (I'm NOT reinstalling it) you can always reach me on Google Talk. (Less is more, trust me on this.) Posted on Sunday, January 8, 2006 6:56 AM General Interest | Back to top

Make sure you file a bug report on that one!! I will have to do some testing and see if that happens to me. I *did* notice it imported all my Hotmail contacts in. It did also keep all my MSN Messenger 8 contacts and groups as well though ...

Sorry to hear that, but I'm not likely to be much help. I used it once, uninstalled it immediately and it trashed my previous Messenger install.

You guys do realize I'm not tech support, right? I'm just a guy with a blog who doesn't have any answers to your problems. Sorry. And for what its worth, if you can't tell the difference between my blog and MS Tech Support, maybe you shuldn't be installing BETA software in the first place.

I installed windows live messenger, it went well for a few days. And one fine morning, when i signed in, all my contacts were gone. I tried different options but to no avail. Can any body suggest what could have gone wrong. Now even if I am online, my contacts can't see me online. Any Suggestions

look microsoft have f**ked up. Get over it! Just go back to using the previous version i.e. 7.5 bla bla bla. With regards to the uninstalling problem, this is easily fixed by going back to the restore point created when you installed the newer version.

actually, the new (non-beta) version works quite well at this point, so I don't have any reservations about recommending people give it a shot.
