Chris G. Williams Beware: I mix tech and personal interests here.
I don't normally blast Microsoft as a company, because I happen to like them overall and I know some really terrific people that work there. But I have to say my experience with XBox Support completely sucks.

As I mentioned previously, here, my Xbox 360 kicked the bucket.  Not in a dramatic 3 red rings kind of way, but in a slow, sad death kind of way... everything gradually turned green. My 360 lasts about 5-10 minutes before it happens... and gets progressively worse as it heats up.

So I called the 1-800-4MYXBOX number and got a hold of a human (thats debatable... she was running off a script) and tried to explain the problem I was having. It took about 30 minutes, and I'm still not sure she understood me, since she kept repeating the same basic questions:

It's NOT the TV, it's NOT the cable... YES I tried a different TV, YES I tried a different cable... Yes it happens with DVDs and Games and on the Dashboard. NO it's not the hard drive...

Eventually, after putting me on hold several times she says it needs repair. (No kidding??)

Then she tells me it's going to be $99 to repair it.  This xbox is less than a year and a half old. I treat it well, don't move it, don't use it excessively, etc... and it FAILS on me... and I have to pay $99 to get it fixed?!?  Completely unacceptable.

I am so pissed right now, I'd like to chuck my 360 through window of XBOX Support.  Maybe then somebody would actually listen to what I'm telling them. This problem started immediately after downloading and running an update. (I know, I know that doesn't mean the problem is related, but it is suspicious.)

Regardless of the how or the why, I just want my damn 360 fixed. Posted on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 6:16 PM General Interest | Back to top

Look at this way: Would you rather pay $99 to get it fixed, or $299 to get a new one?

Are you sure you don't still have a warranty on it? You mentioned it was a year and a half old. If you paid the extra for the two year warranty, then it should still be valid. However, since your 360 didn't die with the red rings, then I don't think it's covered by the new extended warranty.

Before hurling an electronic device through a window, I would make sure all of my bases are covered first. :P

# What about flexing the solder joints a little?

Strange kind of failure. It happens both with NTSC and also Y/Pr/Pb connections then? (Not that I'd recommend going back to standard definition...) I think that the VGA cable would still have the same effect since it uses Y/Pb/Pr. Probably no use in trying that.

I've sent two 360's back for repair, and had great experiences each time. RROD both of those times, not this kind of oddball issue.

Maybe you can wrap the unit in a towel, then put it on one of those wall timers where you can select it to turn on and off every half hour. You know the ones with 48 little toggle settings? They cost about $10 in the store. Then run it that way, turning on and off, for a week straight. If you can get it to warm up and cool down enough times then it would probably flex those cheap tin RoHS solder connecctions enough for one of them to develop a crack, and then it will go 3ROD, which is covered under the warranty!

(Gee, did I actually just suggest doing that??? Shame on me!)

It's just stupid that they would cover a total failure like RROD but not another failure like mine.

Welcome to corporate America, MS is no different. Sad truth is that *everyone* will still buy their products with this crap service.

Its the way you buy consumer electronics in the USA - 30 day warranty is normal unless you pay through the nose for the extended rip-off-commission-producing versions.

At least in the UK you can rely on 12 months as standard - not that this would help you of course.

I agree, man. First off, it is completely unacceptable that they beat around the bush with what is (ambiguously) considered an "acceptable" warranty coverage - failure is failure; if the product has malfunctioned in any way, then it's clearly in need of an eff'n repair - and hence, if it needs to be repaired, it damn well better be covered by warranty.

I second the fact too, that you (as well as I) have treated your Xbox 360 with the utmost preciousness -not having moved around constantly, or dropped it, or let any kind of harm come to it - and it amazes me that ours are the first to go, rather than that of those who travel with it everywhere.

All I can say is: Who's worse - Bungie or Microsoft? :)
