Next month, on May 15th, the Twin Cities XNA User Group is hosting a very special guest.  Shawn Hargreaves (Microsoft, XNA Team) has agreed to come present TWO sessions to the user group in one night:

Session 1: Defeating the Network Game Gremlins
The speed of light.
Quantum uncertainty.
Parallel universes.
Bandwidth that for some reason never turns out to be good as the advert from your ISP claimed it would be.

When you set out to write a networked game, you have to worry about these things. This talk will explain why latency and limited bandwidth cause problems, then present strategies for overcoming them. Compress data into smaller packets. Apply prediction algorithms to defeat the evil latency monster. Best of all, recognize when you can embrace the uncertainty and design your game in such a way that these things simply don’t matter!

Session 2: Understanding Shaders
Shaders are cool.
But they are also mysterious and confusing to many people.

This talk attempts to explain shaders in a straightforward way, with lots of practical examples focused on 2D sprite effects. No deep knowledge of 3D graphics architecture is required, just an interest in special effects, plus the curiosity to start exploring this obscenely powerful and massively parallel floating point processing monster known as your GPU.


If you're in the Twin Cities area (or even within a reasonable drive) you do NOT want to miss this one.
