Chris G. Williams Beware: I mix tech and personal interests here.
I deliberately avoided buying a next gen player during the HD-DVD vs Blu-Ray wars. Now that Blu-Ray has won though, I'm thinking I might as well bite the bullet and jump in.

I don't own a PS3, but I know they ship with Blu-Ray.  Is that enough justification to buy one though? Are there better Blu-Ray players on the market, for a comparable (or significantly lower) price? Does the PS3 have enough games to make it a worthwhile purchase?

I know a lot of you have opinions on this topic, so let's hear them. Posted on Sunday, April 27, 2008 8:24 PM General Interest | Back to top

Blu Ray players are still really expensive, so unless you're a big videophile I'd say go with the PS3, where you at least can get the odd game if you want plus have the playback ability.

I briefly thought about getting a Blu-Ray as well, and did a bit of research online where I found some comments about how the player in the PS3 isn't as good as stand-alone Blu Ray players...but how much of that is true I'm not sure, didn't look that deeply into. I'm guessing its the sort of argument between getting a cheap DVD player at Walmart or an expensive namebrand at Best Buy...?

Love my PS3. It has blu-ray, WiFi, bluetooth (for a headset), hdmi, spdif optical out and there is a cheap IR adapter which works with the Hanselman Remote (Harmony 880).

Good games are not that numerous yet, but it that is changing. COD4 with free online play is where I spend too much time, GT5P looks awesome at 1080 too. Mainly I bought it to play blu-ray DVDs via my 1080p projector.

PS3 is the way to go. You know Sony will support it and keep updating all the Bluray features right away and it costs about the same or less than other players. But plan on shelling out a few more dollars for the remote.

The biggest thing that sucks right now is the cost of Bluray disks. But the upconverter in the PS3 is unbelievable. We have ours hooked up to a 50+ inch 1080p LCD and normal DVDs look much better than the Phillips Upconverter we had hooked up before.

Make sure you also get a Netflix account with the Bluray option turned on. But beware that they are planning on charging more for Bluray sometime in the future.

If you want the visual quality and you have a TV that handles 1080p, I think you'll be happy with the PS3.

My Dad purchased a PS3 just for the Blu-Ray support, he likes it.
