Had a NYC Geek Dinner
Had drinks and dinner with Scott Watermasysk, DonXML, Chris Pels and Keith Pleas. We spent the evening answering the problems of the tech industry as a whole - it was a fun evening! Scott reports ... Dang ... he didn't like my pizza restaurant choice ... you should have eaten more of my selection and not Keith's “white“ pizza! :) ......

Heading off to vacation in Finland again for one week (leaving tomorrow), so I won't be online that often - sorry. I am going off to see the Rally championship in Jyvaskyla, Finland. I really got into this sport because I played way-too much RallySport on the XBOX and I find it “way-cool“ to see it live and check out the cars. My 3 year old loves it as well! I'll post some photos from the championship later! Vrrrmmmm Vrrrmmmmmm ......

ASP.NET 2.0: Consuming the Reuters RSS Feeds using the XmlDataSource Control
Earlier I posted about the new Reuters RSS feeds that were made available on recently. These are news feeds which provide news headlines by category as well as the first sentence of the story and a link to the story as it appears on the website. I decided to play with them myself using ASP.NET 2.0 and I thought that I would share with you the details on how to use these RSS feeds with the DataList and XmlDataSource controls. The XmlDataSource control is an outstanding new ......

Generics Article
I am tired of seeing Generics articles with no Visual Basic samples in them - so I won't link to those. Thanks to J. Ambrose Little for including both in this article.

Kent Sharkey is playing peek-a-boo
Geez, as if we needed another reason to go to MSDN's ASP.NET Developer Center, but I have found myself hitting it at least once a day to see what interesting pose Kent will be in. One day he is covering his face, the next he's not, the next he is but with one eye showing. Is there logic to this madness???? ;) ......

Changes to the SiteMapDataSource Control
In looking at Beta 1 of ASP.NET 2.0, I noticed some big property changes to the SiteMapDataSource control from the community previews. First off, the properties SiteMapViewType and StartingNodeType have been removed. This is good, I thought that changing the SiteMapViewType property to Flat was odd to say the least and didn't see much use for it. In place of these removals, the new properties ShowStartingNode, StartFromCurrentNode, StartingNodeOffset and StartingNodeUrl have been added. These properties ......

Sorry for all these non-technical posts today ... but it's Friday. I heard a rumor that Walt Disney was thinking of remaking the movie Tron with modern special effects. I don't know if it would be a remake or if they would be doing some similar-type of story. I am wondering if the rumors are true though, only because the Internet Movie Database usually posts these things and there is nothing on a new Tron movie on their site. I myself think it would be pretty dang cool to redo the movie as I did ......

Been to Western Europe? Then you can't give blood!
I went to go do my civic duty today and give blood since the Red Cross Blood Drive showed up at Reuters here in St. Louis today ... BUT ... it seems that the FDA has provided new rules for who can give blood these days. The new rule is if you have been in Western Europe anytime since 1986 then you can't give blood because of the Mad Cow scare. And since I have eaten all those cheeseburgers in London recently - I was excluded and told that I can't give. I was disappointed. The lady at the blood drive ......

Finland's Wife-Carrying Contest
Thanks to Chris Kinsman for the reminder, but the Finnish Wife Carrying Contest is happening this month in Sonkajärvi, Finland! I once tried to convince my Finnish wife that we needed to do this - but there was no way that she was going to agree! Probably just as well, as the people that enter are pretty serious athletes and I wouldn't of had much of a chance. Here is an example participant: This the favored hold as it leaves the man to run at almost a free-sprint - though they have to go through ......

USA Today Reports on IE Loses
An article came out on the front page of the Money section of USA Today on the loses being taken with Microsoft's Internet Explorer. I mentioned this also earlier as an issue and it seems that it isn't just me. Hopefully SP2 of XP will address everyone's issues as one of the comments from my blog stated. They also report on which other browsers you should give a try ......

Pre-orders now being taken for Microsoft's Portable Media Centers
Something I saw at the MVP Summit this year and never mentioned cause I still thought it was top top secret and I would have people chasing me down if I even whispered ANYTHING to my mother about this at all is now available for pre-order from Amazon. The Microsoft Portable Media Center is an MP3/Video/Photo player that is out there to compete with Apple's IPOD. This, from the demo I saw of it in the MVP Summit, is a pretty cool device. There seem to be two models available - the Samsung Yepp YH-999 ......

Browser Wars are Back!
I hate to say this, but I think that the browser wars are back - and back in a big way. The reason - well, I think partly for these little thoughts and concerns that are going around my head today and yesterday. I am having more and more problems browsing around the Internet as time goes on it seems and I am getting slightly annoyed about it - so I am thinking - “I wonder what it will be like to use THIS browser here?”. I was a big Netscape user till Netscape 4. Once IE4 came out - I ......

While on vacation
Oh vacation time was great this year! I was in Finland for the Midsummer's Festival (longest day of the year) and spent some time with the family in the woods at our place there. Here are some photos of the week: My mother-in-law, me and my kids. The bonfire in the back is a traditional thing for midsummers which you light up at midnight. Midnight? Of course ... it is Finland ... the land of the midnight sun! Oh nice! The view from the second floor balcony of my place - looking out on the lake. The ......

Some Interesting Patent News Today
There is some interesting patent news that came out today. The first is from the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EEF) which posted the 10 Most Wanted Patents that they are going after. A quote from their site: Today, the Electronic Frontier Foundation's Patent Busting Project announced which patents the organization will target first in its campaign to rid the world of frivolous patent infringement lawsuits. After sifting through dozens of software and Internet-related patents submitted to its patent ......
